If you have reports in Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio), you can move them to Supermetrics Studio without rebuilding them by hand. Paste the report link into Supermetrics Studio, and SuperAI builds a new dashboard with the same tabs, widgets, charts, fields, filters, and theme.
Setup takes a couple of minutes, and the dashboard takes about 5 minutes to generate. This article covers what the migration copies, what it doesn't, and what to check before you share the new dashboard.
Note
If you don't see the Migrate report tab when you create a new board, the migration tool isn't available for your team yet. Contact our support team to get access.
How the migration works
Supermetrics reads the structure of your Data Studio report: its pages, the widgets on each page, and the fields each widget uses. SuperAI then rebuilds the report as a Supermetrics Studio dashboard.
We match the field IDs in your report to the same fields in Supermetrics, rather than guessing from how a chart looks. The new dashboard asks for the same data as the original, so your numbers should match.
What the migration doesn't support
Blended data: We don't support reports that join several sources with a Data Studio blend.
Data Studio calculated fields: We don't recreate fields you built in Data Studio. SuperAI adds a labeled placeholder in their place. Supermetrics Custom Fields work as usual.
Bulk migration: You can migrate 1 report at a time. Each report takes about 5 minutes, so plan ahead if you have many.
Very large reports: If a report is too large, you'll see an error message. Copy the report in Data Studio, delete some pages or widgets from the copy, and migrate the copy. A link to a single page doesn't help, because we always read the full report.
Hidden pages: We build only the pages that appear in the report navigation and skip hidden pages.
Before you begin
You need a Supermetrics subscription with the Supermetrics Studio destination.
You need enough AI credits. Migrating a report uses AI credits, the same as any other dashboard you build with SuperAI.
You need permission to change the sharing settings of the Data Studio report. You need to set the link unlisted for the migration to work.
Connect the data sources in your report, such as Google Ads or Facebook Ads, on the Supermetrics Hub.
Fix any broken data source credentials in the original Data Studio report. Working credentials make the migration more accurate.
Is it safe to turn on link sharing?
We read only the structure of your report, never the data in it, so no numbers leave Google. You don't need to install anything or share any passwords.
Link sharing needs to be on only for a minute or two while we read the report. An unlisted link doesn't appear anywhere, so someone would need to guess your exact link in that time. You can turn sharing off as soon as the dashboard starts generating.
Instructions
Step 1: Turn on link sharing in Data Studio
Open your report in Data Studio and click Share.
Open Link settings and select Unlisted, anyone with the link can view.
Copy the report link.
Links from lookerstudio.google.com and datastudio.google.com both work. You can also copy a link to a single page, but we always read the whole report.
Step 2: Migrate the report in Supermetrics Studio
Go to Supermetrics Studio.
Click New board and open the Migrate report tab.
Paste the report link. Supermetrics starts reading the report after a short pause, or when you click outside the field, and shows a loading spinner.
Click Continue.
On the review screen, check the data source and accounts in each row. Fix any that are wrong, or leave them for SuperAI to work out.
Click Create. The dashboard takes about 5 minutes to generate.
What the review screen shows
Each row on the review screen is 1 data source we found in your report.
What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Data source name, account, and widget count | We found the data source. | No action needed. |
| We couldn't tell which data source the report used. | Select the data source. You can't click Create until you do. |
| The data source credentials in the original report are broken. | Selecting a data source here doesn't fix this. Repair the connection in Data Studio, or ask SuperAI to work it out in the chat. |
Warning icon next to a row | The report uses ALL ACCOUNTS for this data source. | Select the accounts by name. See the next section. |
| The report has formulas we can't recreate. | Check those widgets after the dashboard is ready. |
About ALL ACCOUNTS
Data Studio has an ALL ACCOUNTS setting that reads every account on a connection. Supermetrics Studio has no such setting, so we keep the accounts named next to it and drop ALL ACCOUNTS. If your report used only ALL ACCOUNTS, the new dashboard covers fewer accounts than the original. Select the accounts you need by name on the review screen.
Switch to a different data source
On the review screen, you can select a different data source than the one in your report. For example, you can:
Switch from Google's own Google Analytics 4 connector to the Google Analytics 4 connector by Supermetrics.
Replace a Google Sheet that Supermetrics fills with the original data source, such as Facebook Ads.
Replace another vendor's connector with the matching Supermetrics data source.
Step 3: Turn off link sharing in Data Studio
We need link sharing only while we read the report, so you can turn it off as soon as the dashboard starts generating.
Open your report in Data Studio and click Share.
Open Link settings and change the setting back to what it was before.
Step 4: Check your dashboard
The migration does most of the work, but the result isn't an exact copy. Check these points before you share the dashboard with your team or clients.
If numbers differ from the original report, the cause is most often a filter or a date range, so check those first. To fix anything, describe the problem to SuperAI in the chat, such as The default date range should be last 30 days or Add the missing Meta Performance Breakdown page. This is often faster than fixing it by hand.
Check the report settings:
Filters: Compare the filters on the report, on each page, and on each widget with the original report.
Date ranges: Check the date range control and the default date range on every page. We can see that a date range exists, but we may not copy it exactly.
Comparison periods: If a widget compares to an earlier period, we can see the comparison but not which period you chose, so we use the previous period. Check that this matches the original report.
Check the content:
Pages and tabs: Compare the page list with the original report, and check that every page has all its charts. If SuperAI stops after the first tab, ask it in the chat to continue with the rest.
Calculated fields: Find the labeled placeholders SuperAI added in place of Data Studio calculated fields. Ask SuperAI to rebuild them, or create them as Supermetrics Custom fields.
Data sources and accounts: Check that each widget uses the right data source and accounts.
Google Sheets sources: If your report reads from a Google Sheet, check that the sheet is connected and data comes through. If it doesn't, switch to the original data source.
Numbers: Compare a few key metrics with the original report for the same date range.
Troubleshooting
Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The link isn't a report link. | Check that the link contains |
| The report isn't link-shared, is private, or doesn't exist. Google gives the same answer in all 3 cases. | Turn on link sharing and try again. |
| The report has too many pages or widgets for 1 migration. | Copy the report, remove some pages or widgets, and migrate the copy. |
| Your team has reached the limit of 6 reports per minute. A teammate may have used it. | Wait 1 minute and try again. |
| Data Studio isn't responding to our requests. | Wait a few minutes. Don't retry many times in a row, because that makes the wait longer. |
| Your session expired. | Sign in to Supermetrics Studio again. Your link still works. |
| The migration tool isn't turned on for your team. |
The dashboard doesn't look as expected
Check that link sharing was on while we read the report. This is the most common cause of problems.
Check that you have enough AI credits, especially on a trial.
Wait the full 5 minutes for the dashboard to generate.
If SuperAI stopped after the first tab, ask it in the chat to continue.
If rows are missing on the review screen, the data source credentials in the original report are probably broken. Repair the connection in Data Studio and try again.
If you still need help, contact our support team and include the link to your new dashboard.
