Every dashboard in Supermetrics Studio has an owner. The owner decides who can see and change the dashboard, and whose data it shows when someone opens it.
This article covers the roles you can have on a dashboard, how you get a role, and how we keep the owner's connected accounts safe when other people view or interact with the dashboard.
Supermetrics Studio roles and permissions
A dashboard's role decides what a person can do to it.
Capability | Owner | Editor | Viewer | Anyone with the link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
See the dashboard | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes, if link sharing is on |
Edit the dashboard (text, charts, layout) | Yes | Yes | No | No |
Use AI to build or change the dashboard | Yes | Yes, limited to what the owner allows | No | No |
Ask the AI assistant questions about the dashboard | Yes, if the assistant is enabled | Yes, if the assistant is enabled | Yes, if the assistant is enabled | Yes, if the assistant is enabled |
Change security settings (data access, allowed tools, allowed accounts, sharing, password) | Yes | No | No | No |
Delete the dashboard or transfer ownership | Yes | No | No | No |
Run data queries from the dashboard | Yes, without limits | Yes, limited to what the dashboard allows | Yes, limited to what the dashboard allows | Yes, limited to what the dashboard allows |
Create or update campaigns from the dashboard | Yes, if the owner turns this on | Yes, if the dashboard allows it* | Yes, if the dashboard allows it | No |
Note that:
Only the owner can change security settings. Editors can change what's on the dashboard, but never its restrictions.
Viewers and anyone with the link can never edit a dashboard. They can view it and, if the assistant is turned on, ask it questions, but every query stays limited to the tools and accounts the owner allowed.
Anyone with the link has the strictest limits. Even if the owner enables campaign management for the dashboard, someone who opens it via a link can't use it.
Creating or updating a campaign from the dashboard requires someone to review and approve the change before anything happens. A dashboard can't change a campaign on its own.
The following rules define how roles are assigned:
You are | Your role |
|---|---|
The person who created the dashboard | Owner |
Someone the owner invited directly via email with edit access | Editor |
Someone the owner invited directly via email with view access | Viewer |
A member of the dashboard's team | Editor or viewer, based on your team role |
Someone who opened a dashboard shared by link | Anyone with the link (view only) |
Good to keep in mind:
A dashboard belongs to a team. If you're on more than one team, you can only see the dashboard belonging to the team you’re signed in to Supermetrics Studio with.
To create a dashboard, you need an edit-capable team role and a Supermetrics Studio subscription. A view-only team member can't create a dashboard, even on a subscribed team.
Dashboard sharing and privacy
Dashboards are either private, shared with the team, or shared with others via link or email.
For sharing instructions, see our article on dashboard creation and sharing.
Sharing method | Who can open it |
|---|---|
Restricted | The owner and the people the dashboard is explicitly shared with by email. |
Team | Everyone on the dashboard's team can open the dashboard, with view or edit access based on their team role. |
Anyone with a link can view | Anyone with the URL. The owner can add a password. |
Whose data is on the dashboard?
In addition to your role, a dashboard has a data access setting that determines which connected accounts it uses when running a query. You can find these settings in the Data access tab in the dashboard settings.
Setting | Whose data everyone sees | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
Board owner | Everyone who opens the dashboard sees the owner's numbers | Public or team dashboards, including ones shared by link |
Each viewer | Each person sees their own numbers | Dashboards where every viewer connects their own accounts |
When a dashboard uses the owner's data, viewers see the owner's numbers without ever getting the owner's login details. When it uses each viewer's own data, the same dashboard shows different numbers to different people, based on what accounts each person has access to.
Protecting dashboard owner's connected accounts
Even though a viewer or someone with a shared link can trigger real data queries, they can never reach beyond what the owner set up.
Every query is checked against the dashboard's allowed tools and accounts before it runs. As the dashboard owner, you can restrict the accounts the dashboard is allowed to use. You can find the allowed accounts in the Sources & Accounts section in the dashboard settings.
A dashboard can only use a limited, safe set of tools, so it can't reach account management or other unrelated tools.
Campaign management is blocked completely for anyone with the link. If the owner turns it on for team members, every campaign change still needs someone to review and approve it.
As the owner, you decide what your dashboard can access. Everyone else stays within those limits, and only you can change them.
