How to reauthenticate a data source connection

Prev Next

Your data source connection may need to be renewed if it has expired, if you've updated your login credentials in the data source platform, or if you're seeing an authentication error.

Reauthenticating renews the connection between Supermetrics and the data source. You can reauthenticate from the Data sources page on the Supermetrics Hub, and the renewed connection will be updated across all destinations using it.

Common errors this resolves:

  • Authentication failed. You need to reauthenticate at [data source] and then run the query again.

  • Error: Invalid credentials

If you're seeing a login token error, see How to fix login (token) errors.

Instructions

The fastest way to reconnect is in the Supermetrics Hub, where the renewed connection applies across all your destinations. If you prefer, you can also reconnect directly from your destination.

Supermetrics Hub (all destinations)

  1. Go to the Data sources page on the Supermetrics Hub. If you're asked to select a team, select the team that owns the connection you want to renew.

  2. Find and click the data source with the connection you want to renew.

  3. Find the connection in the list and click the reconnect icon at the end of the row.

  4. Follow the data source-specific instructions to connect. See the connection guides for details.

AI tools

AI chats and the Supermetrics MCP server

  1. Go to the Data sources page on the Hub and reauthenticate the connection for the data source you're having trouble with, following the steps above. AI chats and the Supermetrics MCP server use this Hub connection in the background.

  2. In the AI chat or MCP host, find the Supermetrics integration and disconnect the integration.

  3. Reconnect the Supermetrics integration to refresh the connection.

Troubleshooting

  • If the AI tool doesn't recognize your active subscription after reconnecting, the connection might still be tied to a different email address. See this note on connections and subscriptions with AI tools to fix it.

  • If reconnecting doesn't resolve the issue, the error message may not reflect the real problem. It can also indicate a licensing issue or a backend token problem, which can’t be fixed by reconnecting. Contact our support team if the connection still doesn't work after reconnecting.

Reporting and visualization tools

Google Sheets

  1. Open a Google Sheets file.

  2. Click ExtensionsSupermetricsLaunch to open the sidebar.

  3. Go to the Queries tab.

  4. Select a query that uses the data source you want to reauthenticate. Click the 3-dot menu next to its name.

  5. Click Manage data source connection.

  6. Click the chevron next to the data source's name.

  7. Click + Add connection.

  8. Connect to the data source again.

Updating one query refreshes all queries that use the same connection.

If you're using an older version of the Supermetrics sidebar, skip step 3 and select the data source directly from the sidebar before following steps 6–8.

If the error persists in Google Sheets after reauthenticating:

  1. Open the SupermetricsQueries tab.

  2. Find the row for your failing queries. Delete the query ID value in that row.

  3. Scroll to the far right and delete the row's value in the Refresh with user account column.

  4. In the Home tab of the Supermetrics sidebar, scroll down to Templates and workflow and click Refresh all queries.

Data Studio

  1. Open Data Studio and click the data source you'd like to reauthenticate. If you're editing a report, click the edit icon next to your data source, or go to ResourceManage added data sources and click Edit.

  2. On the left side, click Edit connection.

  3. In the data source settings, click the link after View & manage your connections.

  4. Select the team the connection belongs to.

  5. Click the 3-dot menu and select Reconnect.

  6. Connect to the data source again.

  7. Click Complete and continue and Close this window to return to Data Studio.

  8. In Data Studio, click Reconnect, then Apply and Done.

To remove a data source from Data Studio:

  1. Go to ResourceManage added data sources.

  2. Find the data source in the list that you want to remove and click Remove.

  3. Click Remove data source to confirm.

To revoke a data source in Data Studio:

  1. On the top sidebar, click Add data.

  2. Find the data source’s name with "by Supermetrics" beneath it.

  3. Click the 3-dot menu on the card to open the options menu.

  4. Click Revoke access.

  5. Click Remove to proceed.

  6. Click Remove anyway to confirm.

  5. Click Add connection.

  6. Connect to the data source again.

If you're seeing an Excel-specific error:

  • Try switching to Excel Online.

  • If you're seeing a No queries found error, clear the Microsoft Excel app cache.

  • If you see Your administrator has not installed Web Add-ins for your organization, your Microsoft 365 administrator has disabled user add-on installation. Contact your system administrator to discuss your account permissions.

Power BI

  1. Go to Power BI on the Supermetrics Hub.

  2. In the list of queries, click the data source you'd like to reauthenticate.

Data warehouse and cloud storage

Data warehouse and cloud storage (Hub)

Troubleshooting

Your account doesn't appear in the account list

Reauthenticate again in an incognito window.

You're stuck in an authentication loop

Log out from the data source platform completely to clear any bad sessions and cookies, then start the authentication process again.

Depending on the browser you use with Supermetrics, follow the instructions to clear the cache and cookies:

You're seeing a Google multi-account error

If you see either of these errors, follow the instructions to manage Supermetrics and multiple Google accounts:

  • This action is not supported when you are logged in with multiple accounts

  • This was a reauthorization request for user A but you logged in as user B

You're seeing a "No accounts selected" error

This means no accounts were selected when you authenticated the data source. Open the data source settings and select at least one account under Select accounts. Note that this option sometimes uses a different name — for Google Analytics 4, it reads Select properties.

Reauthentication doesn't resolve the issue

If renewing the connection doesn't fix the problem, you may need to remove and reconnect the data source connection. See How to manage data source connections on Supermetrics Hub.
