# How to use a Supermetrics report template in Data Studio

Supermetrics offers a wide range of free report templates for Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio). [Visit our template gallery](https://supermetrics.com/template-gallery?page=1&search=&destination=12532) to explore the full collection.

There are 2 ways to create your own reports from these templates in Data Studio:

- When connecting to a data source in Data Studio
- By selecting a template from our template gallery

We also have a [guided onboarding flow for Data Studio on the Supermetrics Hub](https://hub.supermetrics.com/looker-studio). The following video highlights the guided onboarding with Data Studio using a data source report template.

## Instructions

### Add a template with a data source file

[Follow these steps to add a new Supermetrics data source to Data Studio](/v1/docs/how-to-connect-data-sources-to-data-studio).

At the last step, navigate to the bottom of the data source window and check the **Use report template for new reports** checkbox before clicking **Connect**.

Please note that if you choose this option, the default Supermetrics template for the selected data source will be used whenever you create a new report from this data source file.

### Add a template from the gallery

Before you begin, ensure you're logged into Data Studio with the Google account you use with Supermetrics.

1. [Log in to Data Studio](https://datastudio.google.com/).
2. In a new browser tab, [open the Supermetrics Data Studio template gallery](https://supermetrics.com/template-gallery?page=1&search=&destination=12532).
3. Select a template.
4. Click **Get the template**.
5. If you see a **connector setup window**, follow these instructions to get the data source connector set up, otherwise skip and continue to the next step:
 1. Authenticate your account by clicking **Authorize**.
 2. Select a Supermetrics team to use, if prompted, and click **Next**.
 3. Select the account to use and a query type, if applicable. Other parameters are optional.
 4. Check the box next to **Use report template for new reports**. If you uncheck this box, the template won't be used.
 5. Once you're happy with your setup, click **Connect** in the top-right corner. The next page will display all available dimensions and metrics.
 6. Click **Create report**. After this, the template will fetch all your data in the report, ready for you to derive insights!
6. If you see the **preview of the template**, follow these steps:
 1. On the top right, click **Use my own data**.
 2. Click **Edit and share**.
 3. Select the Supermetrics data source to connect to the template, and connect to the data source. Take a look at our [connection guides](/v1/docs/connect) for more details.
 4. Select the account to use and a query type, if applicable. Other parameters are optional.
 5. Click **Add**.
 6. Click **Add to report**.
7. If the edit button doesn't appear or errors show on the new copy, reload the page or find the template copy on the Data Studio homepage.

Once these steps are complete, you can fully customize the template — add, remove, and modify charts and tables to meet your needs.

## Troubleshooting

### "Get report failed" error

If the template throws a `Get report` failed error when you're trying to set it up, take a look at the URL of the template. If the URL ends with `/preview`, remove that part and reload the page. You should now see a 3-dot menu in the top-right corner. Click the 3-dot menu and select **Make a copy**. Then, replace the unknown data source with your data source as instructed on the template's instruction page.

### Data sources

The data source used in the Supermetrics template needs to be by Supermetrics and the same as the template uses — for example, our Google Analytics 4 template uses the Google Analytics 4 data source by Supermetrics.

If the template uses multiple data sources, check the template's instructions page for the correct order of data sources to connect to. If the list of data sources in the correct order is missing from the template instructions, please [contact our support team](https://hub.supermetrics.com/support).
