This article explains how to select the consent logic for your cookie banner in Supermetrics. You can choose between cumulative and modular logic to control how visitors accept cookie groups.
Supermetrics supports two types of cookie consent logic: Cumulative consent logic and Modular consent logic. These options allow you to determine how cookie groups interact with each other and how site visitors provide consent. Understanding the difference is important for compliance with regulations like the GDPR.
Cumulative consent logic
In the cumulative consent logic model, cookie groups are structured hierarchically. When a user consents to a higher-level group (for example, Group 3), consent is automatically applied to all preceding, lower-level groups (Group 2 and Group 1). This ensures essential tags in the lowest group are always active once consent has been given for a higher tier.
Modular consent logic
In the modular consent logic model, all cookie groups are fully independent of each other. The user must provide explicit, separate consent for every single group.
Consenting to one group does not automatically enable any other group. This granular control allows visitors to make detailed choices about their data privacy.
Compliance context
Modular consent logic is often required to meet strict interpretations of privacy laws, such as those enforced by the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP). Using this logic ensures that users can explicitly switch specific categories on or off without automatic bundling.
Before you begin
You need access to the Tag Management module.
You must use the Supermetrics Cookie Bar with Popup (v4.0). Older versions don’t support the consent logic models.
Instructions
On the Data Activation platform, go to Tags → Privacy.
Click the pencil icon next to the cookie permission setting you want to edit.
In the Basic Settings section, select one of the following options in the Cookie group logic dropdown menu:
Cumulative consent logic: Groups are hierarchical.
Modular consent logic: Groups are independent.
If you select Modular consent logic, you can make specific groups mandatory. Under the Mandatory in banner section, select the checkbox for any group that users can’t disable.
Click Save.
Note
If you change the logic type on an active banner, site visitors may be asked to re-accept their cookie preferences to ensure valid consent.
Troubleshooting
Why can't I add more cookie permission groups?
The system supports a maximum of 60 cookie permission groups to ensure compliance with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) v2.2. If you reach this limit, the option to add new groups is disabled.
